    Abstract

Recently, huge attentions have been paid to the power consumption of base station (BS). In this paper, we consider 5G network with heterogeneous macro cells and small cells, where data and control planes are separated. In the separated network architecture considered in this paper, it is assumed that macro cell BS (MBS) manages control signal and low rate data traffic, and small cell BS (SBS) manages high rate data traffic, in contrast to the conventional separated network architecture, where MBS manages control signal and SBS manages data traffic. Then, a novel power saving scheme for BSs is proposed, where the state of BS is determined based on the number of UEs requiring high data rate under the coverage of the BS and the number of UEs which exist in the overlapping areas commonly covered by neighbor BSs and the considered BS.
